What a hot spot actually is
A hot spot, known clinically as acute moist dermatitis or pyotraumatic dermatitis, is a patch of inflamed, infected skin created and maintained by the dog's own licking and chewing. It is not a condition your dog catches. It is a wound they keep reopening.
The usual signs:
- A red, wet or oozing patch, often with matted fur around the edge
- Hair loss over the area, sometimes appearing within hours
- Heat and swelling compared with the surrounding skin
- Obvious pain or flinching when touched
- Rapid spread. A coin-sized patch can double overnight
Most common on the front legs, paws, flanks, hips and behind the ears, because those are the places a dog can comfortably reach and keep working at for hours.
Why treating the skin alone is not enough
Picture applying a spray three times a day. Each application gets perhaps twenty minutes of undisturbed contact before the dog licks it off, and licking removes the treatment while re-wetting the skin underneath.
Meanwhile the area spends the other twenty-three hours damp. Skin needs to dry and stay dry to close, which is the one thing a licked wound never gets to do.

Common questions about hot spots
How long does a dog hot spot take to heal?
A hot spot that is kept clean, dry and genuinely protected from licking usually improves visibly within three to five days and closes over in one to two weeks. The timeline depends far more on whether the dog can still reach it than on which treatment you use. A spot that is licked daily can stay open for months.
Can a hot spot heal on its own without treatment?
A very mild patch caught early sometimes settles by itself if the dog leaves it alone. Most do not, because licking is self-reinforcing: the more inflamed the skin becomes, the more it itches, and the more the dog licks. If there has been no improvement in three to four days, or the area is spreading, see your vet.
Should I cover a hot spot or let it air out?
Both, which is why the type of covering matters. Hot spots need to dry out, so anything airtight such as a plastic wrap or a tight bandage makes them worse by trapping moisture. What works is a breathable barrier that stops the dog reaching the skin while still letting air move across it. That is the difference between a recovery sleeve and a dressing.
Will a cone stop my dog licking a hot spot?
Usually yes, and that is genuinely why vets recommend them. The trade-off is everything else: blocked vision and hearing, difficulty eating and sleeping, collisions with furniture, and for many dogs a marked drop in mood. Flexible dogs can also still reach low leg and paw spots past the rim. A sleeve solves the same problem for front legs without changing anything else about the dog's day.
Do the sleeves work for paw licking and allergies too?

What size sleeve does my dog need?
Measure, do not guess by weight, because two dogs of the same weight can be two sizes apart. With your dog standing, measure the front leg from the top of the shoulder to the wrist joint, then the girth around the widest part of the upper front leg. Sizes run XS to XXL, covering roughly 4 lb to 90 lb. If your dog falls between two sizes, go up.
