What it actually is

A close-fitting stretch bodysuit. It works by covering the incision so the dog cannot reach it, rather than by restricting the head the way a cone does.

What it covers, and what it does not

Torso and abdomen, which is where spay, neuter and most abdominal incisions sit. Head, neck, paws and tail stay free. A wound on any of those needs something else.

How long it stays on

Usually 10 to 14 days, which is how long a surgical incision takes to close, and typically until the stitches come out. Your vet's discharge note is the authority for your dog.

The part that decides whether it works: a suit only protects a wound while it is on the dog. The reason these beat a cone in practice is not comfort, it is that nobody takes them off at 11pm. The underside unsnaps for toilet breaks, so there is never a reason to remove it and forget to put it back.

It goes on without a fight

The zip runs along the back. The dog steps in and it closes behind them, so nothing has to go over a head that does not want it. That is the whole reason this is manageable single-handed on a sore animal.

The zip also sits on the back rather than the belly, so it is not lying on a spay or neuter incision.

It stretches, and it breathes

Four-way stretch, the same sort of fabric used in activewear. It moves with every step rather than pulling at the incision, and perforated panels keep air moving so it is one light layer rather than padding against healing skin.

The cut is shaped rather than tubular, which is the bit a plain t-shirt gets wrong: those gather in the armpit and chafe by lunchtime. Use your judgement in real heat, the same as you would with a harness.

The whole abdomen is covered

Spay, neuter and abdominal incisions sit underneath, and the suit covers all of it, so the dog cannot reach the wound. It protects dressings, hot spots and skin conditions on the torso too.

Double-stitched seams and a cold gentle wash every two or three days keep it doing that job for the full fortnight.

Toilet breaks without taking it off

The rear section unsnaps underneath and folds back, then snaps shut again. About four seconds, and the suit never comes off.

It becomes routine, and the suit gets washed

Out for walks in it, and you stop thinking about it. This is the stretch where a garment gets muddy or wet and needs washing, which is the reason plenty of owners buy the second one: a clean suit on the dog while the first is on the line.

Will it actually stay on, or will it end up round their neck?

Yes, if you size it right. This question is really the sizing question.

The honest part: a suit a size too big will ride and gather, and that is the commonest cause of one ending up somewhere it should not be.

A correctly sized suit holds because it is cut to the body with four-way stretch and fastens along the back rather than being pulled over the head. There is no elastic waistband to roll, which is what fails on a t-shirt.

Two measurements and you will get it right first time, both in the sizing section below. Size up if you are between two. Guessing by breed is the mistake.

My dog destroys everything. Will they chew through it?

A determined dog can damage any garment. There is very little to get teeth around, and that is the whole of our claim.

The honest part: we have no chew-resistance testing and we are not going to invent a number for you.

What we can say is mechanical rather than magical. The suit sits flat against the body, so there is very little loose material to get teeth around, and it covers the area they are trying to reach rather than sitting between them and it. Most dogs lose interest in something they cannot get purchase on.

If your dog is a serious, practised destroyer, be realistic: supervise for the first hour, and for an unattended dog with a history of eating fabric, a garment may not be the right tool at all. We would rather say that than sell you one.

How does a dog go to the toilet in a full body suit?

It unsnaps underneath. About four seconds, and the suit never comes off.

The honest part: you do have to unsnap it. Every time. Four seconds you will do five times a day for a fortnight.

The rear section opens underneath and folds back, then snaps shut again. It never has to come off over the head, and it never has to come off at all for a toilet break.

That small inconvenience is the whole design. Anything that has to be fully removed gets left off eventually, usually on about day four. Four seconds is the price of the thing staying on. It is shown properly in the video above.

Will it fit my breed? He is a strange shape.

Sometimes no. It is sized on two measurements, not on breed, which is why odd shapes often fit and guesses often do not.

The honest part: six sizes cannot cover every dog, and a very deep-chested or very heavily built dog can fall outside them.

Back length and chest girth decide it. Long and low, barrel-chested and short-backed both work if you measure. These four are all wearing the same garment in different sizes.

What is a dog surgical suit?

Yes. The rear section unsnaps underneath, so you fold it back for a toilet break and snap it shut afterwards. The suit never has to come off over the head. What size dog surgical suit do I need?

Two measurements decide it: back length along the spine from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and chest girth at its widest point just behind the front legs. Will a suit work for my dog's particular surgery?

It depends on where the incision is. A suit covers the torso, so it suits spay, neuter, abdominal and flank wounds well. It does not cover a paw, a lower leg, a tail or anything on the head, and for a wound in those places a suit alone is not enough.
